On Monday our new Walking Rugby team - RWBRFC Old Dogs - played their very first Home fixture, against a visiting Walking Rugby team from Melksham RFC.

Bassett and Melksham had a combined total of 35 players - with ages ranging from 22 to 74 - ensuring sufficient numbers to field two Bassett teams to play three matches each under the floodlights at Ballards Ash. With each match comprising two halves of 7 minutes, it was certainly a good workout!

The Bassett players are learning a little more each week about how to play an effective and fun game, and it is a source of constant amusement that there is not yet one set of universally agreed-upon rules, laws or guidelines. Nonetheless the games were played with trademark enthusiasm, with the fastest player on the pitch a spritely 72 years old!

The teams enjoyed hot burgers and refreshments together in the clubhouse post-match - a big thank you to the Ballards Ash catering team - and it became clear how excited both squads are about the increasing levels of interest being shown in the sport, with a growing number of clubs fielding a Walking Rugby fraternity and more tournaments and festivals being announced.

RWBRFC continues to be very supportive of Walking Rugby with commitment of both time and resources to the fledgling section, which is enjoying increasing numbers every week.

Team Manager Andy Collier said, "Some of our players hold a lifelong passion for the game, while others are here to simply try something new. We have players who have enjoyed 1st team playing careers in the traditional game, all the way to those who had never previously held or thrown a rugby ball. Whatever the reason or level of expertise, we look forward to seeing new faces."
