Royal Wootton Bassett RFC runs weekly Walking Rugby sessions These fun, active sessions are open to anyone aged 45+ or those with a health condition. Stay active, have fun, and make new friends while enjoying the game we all love.
WHAT IS WALKING RUGBY?
Walking Rugby is a modified interpretation of the game that offers a fantastic opportunity for individuals of all abilities, especially those aged 45 and above, or those with health conditions, to participate in a non-contact version of the sport.
In Walking Rugby, players must walk instead of running, ensuring lower impact on joints and reducing the risk of injuries. The game still retains the core elements of rugby, such as passing, kicking, and teamwork, but at a slower pace.
Whether you're a rugby enthusiast or a complete beginner, Walking Rugby welcomes individuals of all skill levels and backgrounds.
WHEN?
Walking Rugby sessions take place every Monday from 6pm.
The 'Old Dogs' team also participates in regular Walking Rugby fixtures, competitive tournaments, and rugby festivals against other clubs in the area. The season's fixtures are arranged in advance, and information will be shared by your Team Manager.
Please find out more by emailing the 'Old Dogs' Team Manager at: walkingrugby@rwbrfc.club

HEALTH BENEFITS
Those involved in the sport believe this form of rugby offers a range of benefits for people managing health issues or seeking a sense of inclusion. Helen Rebello who plays in the team alongside her husband Julian agrees. "As someone with a history of knee problems, walking rugby is helping to strengthen my knees. I would absolutely recommend walking rugby to anyone who wants to get or keep fit, meet new people or just have some fun with a rugby ball."
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Arriving at the club, you will be met by a welcoming group of other players from the squad.
Sessions begin with a brief warm-up and some ball-passing exercises before kicking off four short games of 15 minutes each. There are players of varying levels of fitness and rugby experience, including novices and those reconnecting with the sport, all fostered in an environment where mistakes were met with smiles, shrugs and mutual support.
WHAT TO BRING?
Remember to bring a water bottle and appropriate sportswear.
Studded rugby (or football) boots are essential footwear for playing on the pitch in Winter months. Sports trainers can be worn during the Summer.
Please keep in mind that muddy kit and boots are not allowed in the Clubhouse, so if planning on enjoying a drink at the bar after training, having a clean change of clothes in a kit bag is a good idea.
