Moving to fully remote working during the pandemic left me feeling increasingly out of shape and lacking motivation, especially for someone just on the other side of 50.
Looking for a way to shake things up, friends from Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club suggested I give Walking Rugby a go. While chatting with Rhys Floyd, who coaches the sessions, he suggested I should come along for the final Walking Rugby session of the year.
A relatively new adaptation of the sport for those of us aged over 45, or recovering from illness or injury, the game involves no tackling, which is replaced by a two-handed touch. Running is prohibited, but brisk walking is encouraged. The absence of scrums and dives simplifies gameplay, and scoring a try simply requires walking over the try line ball in hand.
I hadn't played organised rugby since I was a teen, and I'll admit, I was a little nervous about it. First off, I was clueless about what to wear. Rhys said I should borrow some rugby boots if I could, as the winter weather had left the pitches muddy in places. But the truth is, nobody really cares about what you wear.
Arriving at the club, I met a chatty, welcoming group of players all around my age. Rhys led us to the floodlit pitch opposite the clubhouse for a brief warm-up and some ball-passing exercises.
The session involved four short games of 15 minutes each. Expecting a leisurely walking pace, I was surprised by the briskness involved. Despite this, there are players of varying levels of fitness and rugby experience, including novices and those reconnecting with the sport, all fostered in an environment where mistakes were met with smiles, shrugs and mutual support.
Those involved in the sport believe this form of rugby offers a range of benefits for people managing health issues or seeking a sense of inclusion. Helen Rebello who plays in the team alongside her husband Julian agrees. "As someone with a history of knee problems, walking rugby is helping to strengthen my knees. I would absolutely recommend walking rugby to anyone who wants to get or keep fit, meet new people or just have some fun with a rugby ball."
"Rhys, our coach, is awesome," she continues, "He makes the sessions so much fun and everyone is very friendly. I truly look forward to my Monday evenings at the club and always leave with a massive grin on my face - if a little out of breath!"
By the end of my first session, I could understand Helen's enthusiasm. There was so much laughter and fun, and the encouragement, teamwork and positivity really shone through. Plus there was an opportunity for a drink together in the clubhouse afterwards. I can't wait to dive back in come the new year!
