This month, we're delighted to shine a spotlight on a dedicated club member who has been with us since 2019: Michael Liu, a committed parent, a passionate supporter of rugby, and a valued volunteer at Royal Wootton Bassett RFC (RWBRFC).
His sons, Yitak and Yikai, play in the U10s and U12s teams, respectively. The journey to RWBRFC started back in Abingdon, where the boys first got involved in club rugby. After visiting RWBRFC, he was impressed by the facilities, the warmth of the community, and the overall organisation of the club. The decision to make RWBRFC the new rugby home for his boys was an easy one when they moved to Malmesbury in 2019.
With a personal history of playing rugby since secondary school in Edinburgh, he knows first-hand the transformative power of the sport. He shares, "Rugby is a sport for all, with a suitable position for everybody, no matter your shape or size. But most importantly, it's a game built on a foundation of respect and sportsmanship." He believes rugby will help his boys grow into kind, considerate young men - a testament to the values we hold dear at RWBRFC.
When he's not on the sidelines cheering for his boys, he specializes in the design of high-speed machines and works as a principal mechanical engineer at Dyson, leading the development of digital motors.
Volunteering at RWBRFC has been a way for him to show his children the importance of contributing to their community. He shares, "It's a great way to make new friends with like-minded people." Even if it was nerve-wracking at first, he assures us that volunteering has become an enjoyable part of his experience at RWBRFC.
His message to anyone considering volunteering is clear and encouraging: "I highly recommend it for those who have not volunteered before."
As RWBRFC, we couldn't be more grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm he brings to our community. Volunteering is indeed integral to the running of our club, and it's thanks to individuals like him that we can continue to flourish. So here's to our wonderful volunteers – you're the heart and soul of RWBRFC!
Get involved!
Our club is run on an entirely voluntary basis and as such we are reliant on our members to lend a hand when required. There will be weeks when we are short of volunteers - for tasks such as kitchen duties, car parking or serving in the kiosk - in which case you may be asked to step up.
However if you want to get more regularly involved with rugby training, team management or club administration, we would very much welcome your involvement! Or if you have a specific skill, service or trade and can offer some time as and when you are needed, please let us know!
Helping out at our club is great fun and highly rewarding. Please don’t be shy - if you feel you could support the running of the club in any way, please contact your Team Manager or email our Volunteer Co-ordinator here.
