Teammates from Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club are kicking off a series of events to help fund the construction of the club’s new gymnasium and equipment store.

Bassett's 1st XV Center Tim Gallimore has recruited teammates - Kyle Lovell, Gavin Ougan, Phil Bardwell, Simon Anderton, Chris Patterson and Will Hooper - for an endurance 'Wattbike Challenge'.

They aim to pedal 1407 km - the equivalent of cycling from Lands End to John o’Groats. The players will pedal the static bike non-stop over 45 hours, starting on the evening of Friday 13th of October. The event will take place inside our clubhouse, giving visitors an opportunity to cheer on the players as they complete the challenge. They hope to finish on the morning of Sunday 15th October during the club’s busy Minis training session.

The club announced plans last month to upgrade their training facilities with the construction of a new state-of-the-art gymnasium. The facility will be built on space behind the club’s changing rooms currently filled by temporary storage containers. It is hoped that the new building should be completed ready for the 2018/19 season.

"The new gymnasium will create a one-of-a-kind training facility in the area for our entire membership and other user groups within the local community”, Tim explained. “As a club we pride ourselves on developing our players to the very best of their abilities and the new facility will create an environment were we can provide the best strength & conditioning support to go with the superb on-field support we already enjoy."

The players have set a target of raising £2,000 during the event, which will launch a series of similar fundraising challenges throughout the entire club membership. Each new challenge will raise funds towards the gymnasium construction.
