Veteran Bassett Hooker Phil Bardwell has announced his playing retirement at the age of 32.

Phil decided to hang up his boots after completing his final 1st XV appearance during Bassett's vital win aganst Bournemouth this weekend.

Phil first played rugby for Royal Wootton Bassett with the Under 12s and made his senior debut in 2007 aged 17. He went on to become vice-captain in 2019, alongside captain Gavin Ougan.

RWBRFC Director of Rugby, Alan Low, was first to thank Phil for his years of commitment to the club. “Phil has had an incredible career since making his 1st XV debut, and as a one-club-man, he is a true Bassett legend.”

Alan continues, “Prior to my arrival, Phil was regularly travelling back from university to play for RWB, and he has continued to show a huge amount of dedication - not just to get back to play for the club, but behind the scenes he has had to work really hard to get back on the pitch numerous times after serious injuries and operations.”

Phil has also been heavily involved with Dorset & Wilts county rugby, playing a part all D&W age groups, earning 23 caps for the county. Phil captained Dorset & Wilts to a winning final in 2018, and was voted Players’ Player for the campaign.

“I’ve personally known Phil for a long time since his early years with D&W age grades, and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him progress during my time at the club.”

“He has been a true servant to RWBRFC and he can be very proud of all he has achieved within the club and with D&W over the years. We are currently working with Phil to find a role within the club to pass on his knowledge and experience working with our younger players.”

So, bye bye Bards - you will be missed.
