Well, the new season has started and there is a sense of relief that a degree of normality is steadily returning.

It was fantastic to see so many of our members, friends and family joining us for the first of our Golden Jubilee celebrations last Saturday as we kicked off the formal playing season with the McCue Cup game against REME, followed by a tremendously exciting and entertaining 1st XV league game against Camborne.

There was a huge commitment put in by our volunteers to make the day a success and I can only thank everyone for all their hard work. Our guests from Camborne, Dorset and Wilts RFU, our sponsors and the Army were genuinely amazed by the welcome their received from everyone they met and talked to.

Unfortunately, one of our volunteers Simon Kent was taken ill in the evening and had to taken to the John Radcliffe in Oxford for emergency treatment. I’m glad to say that that treatment appears to have gone well and our best wishes go to Simon and his family for a speedy recovery.

So far, the take up of new members this season has been very encouraging with nearly 700 members signed up already. We wish to be a club which is accessible to all and if there is any member who is suffering any financial hardship because of the pandemic, please contact either me or Alec Adams and we would be more than happy to discuss membership options with you.

Over the closed season we installed a new till system which we were reliably informed would link seamlessly with our membership cards and GMS. Those of you that have used the bar and kiosk recently will know this has not been the case, with the system regularly dropping out or running slowly. We are currently working with the developers to rectify these issues but for the time being your continued patience will certainly be appreciated by the bar staff etc. who are doing all they can to serve you as quickly as possible.

On a more positive note, work on the gym is progressing well. The new floor has been ordered and we are looking to have it laid in early October. We are currently discussing equipment options with our suppliers and by Christmas we are hopeful of having a fully functioning facility.

And finally, there is now a range of Golden Jubilee shirts available via the Michael Hope website with more options hopefully to follow shortly. Go on treat yourself new season, new shirt!

Once again thanks for all you do.

Regard

Chris Elias,
Chairman, Royal Wootton Bassett RFC
